About Us

MYCOGEN: Mycological Genetics and Biodiversity

A citizen science-led research initiative dedicated to unveiling the hidden diversity of fungi through DNA discovery.

Our Mission:

Based in southeast Queensland, MYCOGEN was founded with a simple but ambitious goal: to create one of the most detailed and scientifically valuable fungal biodiversity catalogs in Australia. Combining field photography, microscopy, traditional taxonomy, and modern DNA sequencing, MYCOGEN aims to produce high-quality, information-rich fungal observations that contribute meaningfully to both citizen and professional science.

At the heart of the project is a fully self-built fungal research and PCR lab. A cornerstone of MYCOGEN’s ability to conduct every step of the research process, from field collection to DNA-ready PCR material. Unlike most research initiatives which are typically established through institutions, societies, or formal organisations, MYCOGEN represents a growing shift toward independently driven, citizen-operated science. It reflects the increasing accessibility of scientific tools and the growing potential for individuals to contribute directly to fungal biodiversity research.

All observations will be made publicly accessible through platforms like iNaturalist and the MYCOGEN website. Wherever possible, observations will be accompanied by voucher specimens submitted to the relevant herbaria, an important part of MYCOGEN’s commitment to ensuring the long-term scientific value and verifiability of it's data.

While cataloging fungal diversity is the core mission, MYCOGEN also has broader goals:

  • To inspire and support others passionate about fungi to establish their own citizen labs, building a connected network of fungal researchers across the country.
  • To provide tools, data, and collaboration opportunities for scientists and organizations working in mycology and environmental science.
MYCOGEN stands at the intersection of grassroots curiosity and rigorous science — a place where dedicated individuals can make real contributions to our understanding of Australia's incredible fungal biodiversity.
